What is Nonprofit Builder Africa?

Nonprofit Builder Africa is the African hub of Nonprofit Builder. We match African grantees with vetted African consultants, manage each engagement end to end, and report back to the foundation, all under one contract.

Are the consultants based in Africa?

Yes. Our Africa network is 150 consultants who live and work in 22 African countries, with the largest groups in Kenya, South Africa, Uganda, Ethiopia and Tanzania. When a grantee needs a rare skill, we can also draw on Nonprofit Builder's global network of 800+ consultants.

Which languages do the consultants work in?

Almost all work in English. 44 also work in Swahili, 39 in French, 10 in Amharic, 8 in Arabic, 7 in Portuguese and 6 in Kinyarwanda.

What can grantees get help with?

The most common areas are strategy, organisational development, leadership development, monitoring and evaluation, financial management, communications, fundraising, facilitation, board governance, leadership coaching, safeguarding and human resources.

How much should a foundation budget for grantee capacity building?

We recommend planning around $10,000 per year per active grantee. As a rule of thumb, around 30% of grantees will be active in a given year. Typical yearly budgets range from $100,000 to $500,000, and foundations only pay for what is used.
